"The Lynching of (Insert the Name of Any white Killer of an Unarmed Black Here)": an Avant Garde Soul Jazz Hip H-Opera is the story of two young lovers that are activists in the movement for black liberation.
Composed and performed by David Boykin and the SEBAU
The SEBAU is a new band formed specifically for this project featuring Isaiah Spencer on drums, Rollo Radford on bass, Gira Dahnee on piano, Brenda Gilbert on violin, Jayve Montgomery on turntables and samples, Sankara Harouna on vocals, Manu Wisdom on rhymes,
The story is inspired by the current phenomena of the many social protests and demonstrations occurring across the United States (and other countries in sympathy), in response to the large number of unarmed blacks being killed by white civilians and police officers (such as George Zimmerman and Darren Wilson) in the United States, who suffer no punishment for their actions from the U.S. justice system. The music will combine hip hop rapping, soul singing, avant-garde jazz, hip hop dj-ing, and operatic singing.
The Astro Soul Project, which is due out Fall 2019 from Sonic Healing Ministries, features a new expression of the composer, saxophonist, and band leader. We’ve heard his skills as an MC on the track Hyperspace from the album Love Power Magic and on the album Ultra Sheen which featured four tracks of Boykin rapping over the knotty melodies, complex harmonies of his avant-garde jazz style. This new project, however, will feature Boykin singing original songs, ranging in style from traditional jazz -blues, to soul-jazz, to his self styled astro-soul. Boykin describes astro-soul as a fusion of the spirit and aesthetics of Chicago avant-garde jazz style with the soul, funk, and sensuality of electro-soul music.

Another essential document of the Chicago Creative Music scene from the 1990s til today. Live concert recording of David Boykin Expanse sometime around the year 2000. Its an epic 50 minutes of music comprised of two extended tracks that segue into each other. The recording is from a night of music in a Chicago night club. The 2nd set may be released later as volume two. The ensemble at this time in its development creates some very interesting soundscapes as they get into collective improvisation featuring ARP synthesizer and turntable scratching combined with woodwind extended techniques on flute and saxophones. All undergirded by a rhythm section that shifts seamlessly from swing to cosmic omni-rhythmic cacophony to funk and hip hop. Its the only commercially available recording that features David Boykin and Matana Roberts. Great solos from Matana Roberts, Nicole Mitchell, and also Aaron Getsug (on baritone saxophone). Its the Only recording of Jim Baker playing ARP with David Boykin Expanse or Outet. The rest of the lineup features Josh Abrams on bass, Chris Courtney on congas, William Kurk on keyboard, Besco on turntable.

Alter destiny rapper Dark Merry delivers a dry, witty, yet scathing criticisms of Afrofuturism in this cinematic recounting of his interview by Afrofuturist, curator, and pleasure activist, Ingrid LaFleur. The story is illustrated by a mashup of artfully layered archival images; original dance choreography; and footage from the interview (which took place over the internet during the pandemic). The story is underlined by a spacey score from the beat maker Dr Belsidus with echoey electronic bass tones and bell chimes over sinuous synthesized drums.
The title of the film is a refrain in Dark Mery's storytelling and an unintentional ebonicization of the title of Ingrid LaFleurs interview series “What Does The Afrofuture Say”. In the film, Dark Mery introduces himself; proceeds to speak about the problematic origins of the term; and then elucidates its further increasing and troubling popular usage since its origin to commodify black culture.
