David Boykin is one of the most important and enigmatic musicians of Chicago’s creative music scene in the recent era.  He is a revolutionary storyteller working in the mediums of: music composition, band leading, saxophone shamanism, afro electronic soul singing, rapping, beat producing, conceptual art, and filmmaking.  He has released over 20 album length recordings while performing in venues large and small from Hong Kong, to Dakar, to Moscow, to Paris, and to St Louis in the last 25 years. He has exhibited visual artwork at the University of Chicago and the Chicago Art Department.


He is the founder of Sonic Healing Ministries, an organization that performs all improvised music as a spiritual practice. They presented the Hereafterfest, an annual afterfest session from 2005 to 2018 in addtional to regularly hosting “free jazz” jam session in Chicago.


His varrying current projects are led by different personas that he’s cultivated, including:  David Boykin, the premiere avant garde jazz music composer and woodwind instrumentalist focusing on saxophones, clarinets, and drumset; Dr. Belsidus the  beatmaker who composes and perfoms live instrumental hip hop music utilizing turntables, samplers, drum machines, and synthesizers; Abeeku, the electrosoul singer and songwriter;  and Dark Mery, the anti-afrofutrist rapper.
